Designing a Safe Balcony for Children: Key Considerations

Jun. 15th

The balcony—a cherished space for enjoying fresh air and nature from the comfort of home—serves as a versatile extension of indoor living. Whether used as a private retreat, a green space, or simply a place to relax, balconies have become a central feature of urban homes. However, for families with young children, safety must be a priority in balcony design to ensure that these areas are as secure as they are enjoyable.

Our team at DB Architekt has extensive experience designing child-safe spaces for schools, including kindergartens, nurseries, and primary schools, where the unpredictability and curiosity of young children present unique challenges. We apply these insights to residential projects, especially for balconies in multi-story buildings and housing complexes, where safety considerations are essential. Here are some key safety guidelines for child-friendly balcony designs

Opt for Vertical Railings

Horizontal railings, while modern in appearance, can be a climbing temptation for young children. To prevent this, use vertical railings in your balcony design. Vertical rails make it harder for children to climb, enhancing safety without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.

Maintain a Safe Gap Between Rails

To prevent children from slipping through or getting stuck, the spacing between vertical rails should not exceed 4 inches. This gap size is generally considered safe, as it prevents small children from squeezing through while still allowing airflow.

Avoid Movable Furniture in Unattended Balconies

Avoid placing lightweight chairs or small furniture items that children could move close to railings. If you want seating in the balcony, opt for heavier, sturdy pieces that are difficult for children to shift. This minimizes the risk of children using furniture as a climbing aid.

Install High-Placement Latches on Access Doors

For added security, ensure balcony access doors are fitted with latches or locks positioned high up, out of reach of young children. This precaution helps prevent unsupervised balcony access, allowing adults to control when and how children enter the balcony.

By integrating these safety features, you can create a balcony that is both enjoyable and secure for every member of the family. At DB Architekt, we’re committed to designing spaces that balance beauty with functionality, making your home a place of comfort and safety for all ages.
